The name means “pope’s new castle,” referring to the 14th century period when the seat of the Roman Catholic Church was in Avignon (between 1309–1377). In fact Pope Clement V moved to Avignon and as a wine lover, he promoted the wine production around Avignon, wines became rapidly known as 'Vin du Pape' and the Château des Papes was built at the top of the hill in 1317. Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards are characterized by the diversity of the soil rich in limestone rock, round pebbles and clay with fine sedimentary sand with a big variety of grapes known predominantly as Grenache. In short, a good bottle of this type of wine will have fruit flavors with notes of herbs which francophiles call "garrigue", to refer to the local herbs like sage, rosemary and lavender.
