Full Description of the Walking Tour: Saint Germain de Près & Le Marais

Saint Germain des Prés:

Built in the left bank of Paris, the wonderful St Germain de Près  is an old but chic neighborhood that takes its name from the old Benedictine abbey founded in the 8th century. It rapidly became a meeting point for the Revolutionaries like Marat and Danton and the Encyclopedistes (Diderot) in the 18th century, for the french intelligentsia and the artists (Picasso, Cocteau, Modigliani) in the 1950s and 60s all of whom marked the soul in every street of the area.

Today it is known for exquisite chocolate shops, historical jazz clubs, timeless bookshops, art galleries, nice cafés and restaurants within a relaxed and kind of elitist atmosphere. Admire the 17th century Saint Sulpice Church, one of the biggest cathedrals in Paris home to three Delacroix paintings. Enjoy a café at Cafe de Flore while admiring the VIe century Saint Germain de Près abbey. Later, take a walk to the nearby small square place de Fürstenberg bearing the name of Cardinal Guillaume Egon de Fürstenberg, abbot of Saint-Germain-des-Prés at the beginning of the 18th century, undoubtedly the most romantic in the city! Enjoy Rue Bonaparte for shopping and other nice pedestrian streets where your guide will lead you!

The Marais:

Then cross to the right bank towards the Marais, a trendy, festive district with a village feel. Formerly a marshy area, the Marais district rose from the ground and quickly developed and became the heart of the Jewish community in Paris. With time it has undergone several transformations, going from a chic residential area housing the homes of wealthy aristocrats and even the Royal Court, to a neighborhood in ruins. Today, the Marais is at its finest days, multi-faceted offering a leisurely stroll along cobblestone streets with trendy bars, restaurants, shops and even restaurants for foodies.

Also, visit the iconic Place des Vosges, originally Place Royale, it is not only the oldest planned square in Paris but also one of the most beautiful ones. Also, walk along the Rue des Rosiers, a major center of the Paris Jewish community where you can find public notices, specialised book-stores, numerous good restaurants and delis selling kosher food, the place to be to find the best falafel! Within an Haussmannian architectural style,  visit sumptuous mansions like Hôtel de Sully, museums like Picasso Museum and shopping streets with a typically Parisian atmosphere.

Take your time to discover important vestiges of the Philippe Auguste wall (12th century) as well as historical and cultural gems like the Musée Carnavalet (a museum about the history of Paris) Discover the fashionable part of the district at Rue Vieille du Temple and Francs Bourgeois, home of many little shops, trendy restaurants (Café des musées), fashion houses, and hip galleries. Don't miss interesting churches like Saint-Paul and flamboyant gothic Saint Eustache with one of the largest organs in France !
