Before the construction of the first monastic establishment in the 8th century, the island was called Mont Tombe, implying the idea of a graveyard. According to a legend, the archangel Michael appeared in 708 to Bishop Aubert of Avranches, and instructed him to build a church on the rocky islet. Italian architect, William de Volpiano built the Abbey and designed the Romanesque church with its transept at the top of the mount while the other places like the crypts and chapels were located underground to sustain the weight of the whole construction. The abbey was finished in 1084 and convent buildings were added and extended through the 11th and 12th centuries.
You can start by visiting the Benedictine Abbey itself, the first UNESCO's World Heritage Site. Continue your visit at the crypts and admire the different places that build up the foundations of the Abbey. You can find the a spiritual crypt Notre Dame des Trente Cierges, the monks covered walk and the Notre Dame sous Terre chapel.
Next you can continue with the other buildings or take a stroll around the village and let yourself be taken back to the medieval atmosphere in its narrow paved streets. You can have lunch near the Mount or in the actual fortified city. Check our recommendations below.
The buildings on the northern side of the Mont are known as ‘The Marvel’ and they were built after the destruction in the 13th century. Here you can visit the Knights room with its elegant gothic norman style; the Gothic Hosts' Room were lords and kings were received and the cloister and refectory used by the monks.
