Before the construction of the first monastic establishment in the 8th century, the island was called Mont Tombe, implying the idea of a graveyard. According to a legend, the archangel Michael appeared in 708 to Bishop Aubert of Avranches, and instructed him to build a church on the rocky islet. Italian architect, William de Volpiano built the Abbey and designed the Romanesque church with its transept at the top of the mount. The abbey was finished in 1084 and convent buildings were added and extended through the 11th and 12th centuries.

You can start by visiting the Benedictine Abbey itself, the first UNESCO's World Heritage Site. Continue your visit at the crypts and admire the different places that build up the foundations of the Abbey. You can find the a spiritual crypt Notre Dame des trente cierges, the monks covered walk and the Notre Dame sous Terre chapel. The buildings on the northern side of the Mont are known as ‘The Marvel’ and they were built after the destruction in the 13th century. Here you can visit the Knights room with its elegant gothic norman style; the Gothic Hosts' Room were lords and kings were received and the cloister and refectory used by the monks.

Continue your tour to the most mythical cities of France: Saint Malo. Find your sea feet and open your senses wide, for here everything is to be inhaled, and experienced. Stroll around the citadelle with its beautiful cobbled streets, the city within the old walls and also walk around the top of the ramparts with beautiful views over the beaches and the harbour. Head outside of the walls, towards the promenade of Sillon, the waters where the Saint-Malo flotilla is docked, or along the Môle des Noires an impressive 500 meter long pier located at the entrance to the port of Saint-Malo.

If the low tide allows it, explore the Grand Bé, a tidal island which lies in the mouth of the Rance River, a few hundred meters away from the walls of St Malo. At low tide, you can access the island by walking through the Bon-Secours Beach and spot some remains of an ancient fort. You can see the tomb of François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand, a renowned French writer buried on the island.
