Following a pickup from your hotel, head on a 1 hour ride to a Van Gogh private tour in Auvers-sur-Oise, an open air museum that will reveal details of Van Gogh's (1853-1890) last days of his life. Indeed, this village was home to Van Gogh for 70 days before his death. The both passionate and depressed painter was incredibly productive in Auvers-sur-Oise, inspired by its inhabitants, architecture and nature. He painted 70 paintings as well as numerous drawings.
Walk around the charming village and discover everything that inspired his paintings, from the vast wheat fields and blue skies, to farm cottages and the famous Gothic style church of Sainte Auvers-sur-Oise whose painting showed a different approach from that of the Impressionists.
After a tour around the village head to the famous Auberge Ravoux, the Inn where Van Gogh rented his bedroom. This intimate tiny room with no furniture or decoration, except for a wooden chair, overflows a special atmosphere as it has become today a place of memory for such complex human and painter. The landlords never rented the room NO.5 again. The room next-door was occupied by another artist, Anton Hirschig, and its furnishing gives you and idea how artists lived at the end of the 19th century. The Ravoux Inn welcomes you in the authentic atmosphere of it's dinning room and café almost untouched since the time of the painter.
Afterwards, pay a last tribute to the painter by visiting his place of burial. Van Gogh's graveyard lied besides his brother, Theo, under a pile of green leaf plants. If time allows and if you desire, you can visit the Absinthe Museum.
