ITINERARY

Start your Apilles Villages Private Tour with a ride beyond the olive trees & vineyards to your first stop: Eygalières, a hidden gem surrounded by marvelous landscapes of olive groves, green valleys and home to a rich architectural patrimony. Perched on a small hill, Eygalières is marked by an authentic charm, this idyllic village will give you an idea of the 'provencal art de vivre', through its traditional shops, cafés, gardens, market, this town will for sure delight you! Enjoy the château ruins with its stunning view!

Move on to the neighbor village of Saint Remy de Provence, a history book by itself, the place where the seer Nostradamus was born and where Van Gogh painted countless pieces like Starry Night. Nearby, you'll have the opportunity to admire two Roman monuments, the Mausoleum and the Arch of Glanum. The old town Glanum, home to pre-Celtics (Glanics) is a unique archeological site located at the gates of the city. Visit the magnificent Triumphal Arc, the Mausoleum and the interesting ruins!

Near the Glanum ruins, visit the Saint Paul Monastery not only a masterpiece of 11th century Provençal romanesque art which is also beautifully well preserved, but also a psychiatric institution where Van Gogh was confined and treated for mental illness from 1889 to 1990. You can visit Van Gogh's rooms and observe the wheat fields that inspired him so much for his paintings.

Later, reach the hilltop village of Les Baux de Provence, a typical perched village completely pedestrianised, one of the most beautiful villages in France. Enjoy the local market on Tuesdays and the traditional calcareous rocky houses along the winding streets that lead to the ruins and museum of an 11th-century castle at the highest part of the hill. Don't miss for a thing, the Carrières de Lumière, a monumental ancient quarry used for art exhibitions where 20th century artworks are projected against the quarry walls. Spectacular to see!

Next reach Fontvieille,  a small Provencal village with gazebos, old wells, ancient streets and with imposing historic, heritage and cultural charms that merits a visit. Do not miss the Mill of Daudet and the superb avenue lined with ancient pine trees. Visit the famous windmill of Alphonse Daudet, the holy grail of this place, which became his inspiration for a poetic and natural style. His "Letters from my mill" (Lettres de mon Moulin) refers to mills overlooking the village.

If time allows, visit Maussane-les-Alpilles a charming town that is worth the stop on the way back to Avignon. Stop by  Jean Martin boutique at 9 rue Charloun Rieu for exquisite prepared Provençal food products, like tapenade and caviar d’aubergine! It’s a five-minute walk from the main square. Then stop by Moulin Jean-Marie Cornille, the place for olive oil and one of the best olive oil producers in the region!
