ITINERARY

Marseille is the most “Mediterranean”, multicultural and dynamic city in France. It was first established as a Greek colony in 600BC, making it the oldest city in France. It was known as the colony of Massalia and it wasn't until 1480 that it became part of France.

Your tour will start where everything began in Marseille, at the Panier district (the basket). This old part of the city with typical, old and colorful facades, where narrow streets lead you to pleasant squares, is settled on a hill at the center of Marseille. The district is alive thanks to the dynamic cafés and restaurants as well as the craftsmen and creators that open their doors to you. Stroll along the Rue du Petit Puits from where you can perceive the sea and pass by the Place de Lenche, a square with a fantastic view over the church La Bonne Mère.

You may know that Marseille became the first official soap producing region since the Middle Ages! The city had a lot of soap creators thanks to the abundance of raw materials such as olive oil and soda. Don't hesitate to buy some of the typical Savon de Marseille if you see an authentic soap shop! Continue your walking tour of Marseille by stopping at the Cathedral La Major. This emblem of Marseille is one of  kind by it's architecture and spectacular dimensions! It's the only cathedral of France constructed in the 19th century.

Admire the latest modern architectural jewel from 2013, the MUCEM, (Museum of Mediterranean Civilisations). End your tour by walking along the Canebière Street, the Champs Elysées of Marseille until you reach the Old Port. The numerous sailboats nestled in the “Vieux Port“ are the beating heart of the city. Stroll around the 17th century city hall where many charming cafés and restaurants wait for you. Enjoy the view on the Notre Dame de la Garde basilica.

If you are into prehistorical art, don't miss the newly restitution of the Cosquer Cave, a sunken cave since the end of the the Ice Age. A real prehistoric treasure restored within the Mediterranean Villa that can be visited in exploration modules with a scenography evoking diving. This exceptional cave was found in the calanques of Marseille at Cap Morgiou and was discovered in 1985.
